-The Best of Success
PLAN your Work and Work your PLAN.
Henry Kissenger said, “The task of a leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.” I have always told my organizations, “I don’t drive the bus; I get out in front of it and PLAN for the potholes, accidents and detours ahead so by the time the bus arrives, it continues on a smooth path getting us where we need to be.” It is rare for a person or organization to find themselves at their destination by happenstance. A roadmap is necessary, a checklist is essential, a blueprint is indispensable. Here are 3 quick strategies for Strategic PLANNING. These are simple ways to focus on what is important and give you the roadmap necessary achieve your goals.
1. Write It Down.
A PLAN that stays in your head is a dream. It is not until you put it on paper will you see it as anything more.
Write down the beginning. As in any PLAN, there’s a beginning. What is your current status? Write this information down. You have to start somewhere, but you haven’t started unless you write it down.
Write the goal, the end result, the finished product, the successful end. This has to be clear and concise. It has to be something tangible and definite, so you know it is complete when you complete it. Every PLAN must have a final destination.
Write down a date. It also has to have a time limit to attach to your PLAN so you can gauge your success or your progress.
2. Break it down.
Develop a step by step process to achieve your goal. Your PLAN must bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to go. When you break these goals into easy steps, you will uncover your available options, set priorities for them, and define the methods to achieve them. Your steps will spell out who, what, where, why and how much it will take to accomplish your goal. These steps, these short term PLAN are the operating PLAN defining the goals and how they are to be carried out. This is simply called a strategy.
3. Act on it.
The best thought out PLAN and strategies mean nothing without action. Blueprints on desks are buildings not constructed. Maps in offices are roads not traveled. PLANS without action are wasted effort. Making PLANS are obsolete unless you proceed toward your goals. You must take action to perform your strategies.
